What are the similarities and differences between assessments, diagnostics, and treatment in a combat scenario versus a civilian scenario?
The biggest differences between combat and civilian is that our first job is to eliminate the threat then treat. Additionally, you only have the med equipment that you carry on your back so you need to get creative and be decisive in what you really need to bring with you.
Do you have to be incredibly book smart to graduate the medical portion?
You do not have to be extremely intelligent, just be dedicated and put in the time to study. It’s doable.
Which gets a higher level of medical training, PJ or SEAL medic?
Depends on the SEAL medic. A lot of them are going through civilian contractors and coming out with TCCC certs. Some are getting their paramedic certs as well. ALL PJs are National Registered paramedic certified and do advanced procedures. And it has been my general observation that as a fresh 3 level PJ you are more trained and more confident doing all medical procedures.
How much medical training does a PJ do? Not trauma, more like medical emergencies like cardiac, respiratory, GI, etc.
PJ's are Nationally certified paramedics so we get all of that training but only use it about once a year when we do civilian rotations.
