What is the first step I should take if I am currently serving in the USAF and want to join an SW careerfield?
First step is to speak with the career advisor make sure your current AFSC can release you and that you are in your retraining window. Depending on where you are stationed (as of now) spec ops recruiters cannot give you a PAST test. So you will need to travel to a base with a STS or RQS on it and have them conduct a PAST test for your package. Keep in mind, don’t do this too early because they are only valid for approx. 6 months.
Do you have any advice about the process of cross-training so I have a better chance of being approved?
I would volunteer as much as possible around the base where you are working and hopefully come home with an Airman of the quarter or something like that. Additionally, get some school knocked out and check out my reading list. All of the books recommended in there will help you become a better leader and teammate.
Do you think it would be smart to cross train into Pararescue... I would sign up for security forces then cross train over?
Absolutely not. I would recommend going straight in for PJ if that is what you want to do. Cross training is never a guarantee. The Prior service program is one of the Air Forces most selective programs. The Air Force’s priority is new enlisted for pipeline slots than maybe back fill with AFR or ANG students and then finally Prior Service.
