What is the first step I should take if I am currently serving in the USAF and want to join an SW careerfield?
First step is to speak with the career advisor make sure your current AFSC can release you and that you are in your retraining window. Depending on where you are stationed (as of now) spec ops recruiters cannot give you a PAST test. So you will need to travel to a base with a STS or RQS on it and have them conduct a PAST test for your package. Keep in mind, don’t do this too early because they are only valid for approx. 6 months.
Can you explain the retraining process?
Simply stated, for the retraining process, you will go TDY to do Phase 2 which is a mini selection given that you are selected for phase one which is just a resume pretty much. Then if you are accepted at phase 2, you will start the retraining process and get a date to attend A&S.
If I got selected at Phase 2, would I be waiting a long time before I’d get slotted for a class for A&S?
It would only be a couple months depending on how many are in front of you.
I have been to Indoc before, will the Test Event be good for me to attend?
Absolutely, I always tell guys who have been to Indoc before that it is a chance to be the person you wanted to be at Indoc and try out different leadership tactics since the events are all about learning yourself and your team with real smoke sessions and real instructors but no negative impacts to your career.
Do you have any advice for someone like me who's debating going CRO vs. staying enlisted? Already have a degree and just have to take the AFOQT
If you've been in for a while then I would recommend you go CRO because if you are coming in as a e5 PJ then you have a lot of catching up to do… but as an officer you can start out a little more fresh.
After A&S do you go straight to a school or go back to your home station (for cross trainees)?
You will go straight to pre dive school, then dive school, then back to your duty station to PCS to Kirtland. Make sure you check out the pipeline page on the website as well.
Would the Air Force take prior Navy with tattoos if I want to do a Special Warfare job?
Yes, they will. Look at AFI 36-2903 for the specific tattoo regulations. Generally speaking, tattoos are ok unless they are on your head, neck or hands. Nothing derogatory either. The best thing to do is get with a USAF Special Warfare recruiter through Airforce.com.
Do you think it would be smart to cross train into Pararescue... I would sign up for security forces then cross train over?
Absolutely not. I would recommend going straight in for PJ if that is what you want to do. Cross training is never a guarantee. The Prior service program is one of the Air Forces most selective programs. The Air Force’s priority is new enlisted for pipeline slots than maybe back fill with AFR or ANG students and then finally Prior Service.
I have to go through a “phase 2” what exactly is phase 2?
It's a 1 week course that will challenge your leadership skills. There are lots of team problem solving events, of course a lot of physical activity, and a board at the end. Mostly gauging how you react to stress and teamwork.
Since I’m cross training will they send me to SW Prep course first?
You will go to phase 2, then probably a shortened version of the SW prep course. Phase two is still five days.
